Keep Out the Heat

If you want to keep your house cool, it is important to keep the heat out. A major way heat enters a home is through windows. It is important to make sure your windows are properly sealed and insulated, especially if they are older or less energy efficient. Windows are also the highways for hot sunlight to enter your house. Be sure to keep shades and drapes closed during the day and consider investing in black out curtains to keep even more heat out.

Warmth from outside is not the only thing that may be heating your house this summer; there are likely also temperature-raising culprits inside your home. Incandescent light bulbs waste nearly 90 percent of their energy by producing heat so switching to more energy efficient CFL light bulbs will slightly decrease your house temperature and greatly decrease your energy bill.

Keep In the Cool

Once you’ve gotten all the heat out, it is important to keep the cool in! Walk the perimeter of your home and seal off any leaks or cracks you see to make sure no AC is escaping. Sealing leaks could save you up to $200 a year in energy costs! If your air-cooling system is not insulated, consider sealing the ducts with insulation. This will keep the cool air from your air conditioner inside the ducts so it can circulate throughout your house.

The many doors inside your house can also play a role in the temperature of your home. Keeping the doors of unused rooms closed during the heat of the day ensures that the cool air from your AC is concentrated in your most-used areas. At night when the outside temperature lowers, open all doors so the cool air can flow naturally throughout the entire house.

Keep it all Working

The best way to keep your home cool is to ensure your HVAC system is working as efficiently as possible. Make sure to change your air filter every month to maximize airflow (typically, 1” filters need to be replaced monthly and a 4” or 5” filter every 3 months). If you notice any changes in your HVAC system or air quality, call a professional as soon as possible to check the system and resolve any issues.
